Old-Fashioned Stack Cake
- 1/2 c. shortening
- 1/2 c. sugar
- 1/3 c. sorghum molasses
- 1 egg, beaten
- 3 1/2 c. flour
- 2 tsp. baking powder
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1/2 tsp. soda
- 1 tsp. ginger
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 1/2 c. buttermilk
- Cream shortening, sugar and molasses.
- Add beaten egg and vanilla; blend well.
- Sift together dry ingredients.
- Add alternately with milk, beating smooth each time to make a stiff dough.
- Roll out on floured surface to thickness of pie crust, cut in circles the size of bottom of pie pan.
- Place rounds of dough on cookie sheet; bake in preheated oven at 375u0b0 for 12 to 15 minutes, or until golden brown.
- Put together with spicy, well sweetened applesauce while warm.
- Let stand for several hours before serving.
- Makes 9 layers.
