Split Pea Soup

  1. In a large saucepan, combine all of the ingredients; bring to a boil.
  2. Reduce heat, leaving cover ajar, simmer for 3 hours, stirring occasionally.
  3. Remove and discard bay leaf.
  4. Remove the ham hocks; when coolenough to handle, cut meat into bite-size pieces.
  5. Return meat to the soup and heat through.
