Burnt Sugar Spice Cake Friendship
- 2 cups flour, all-purpose
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon cloves ground
- 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1/2 cup vegetable shortening
- 1/2 cup sour milk
- 3 tablespoons sugar syrup burned, see note
- 2 large eggs
- 1/2 cup sourdough starter
- Sift together first 7 ingredients.
- Add next 5 ingredients.
- Beat 3 minutes with electric mixer.
- Fold In: 1/2 cup finely chopped nuts and 1/2 cup golden seedless raisins.
- Bake in a greased and floured 13 x 9 1/2 inch pan for 35 to 40 min at 350F (180C).
- NOTE: Burnt sugar syrup-- put 1/2 cup granulated sugar in a small skillet and stir over medium high heat until melted and quite dark.
- Remove from heat, add 1/4 cup water, and stir in well, but BE CAREFUL as the syrup splatters when water is added.
