MJ's Refried Beans

  1. Cooking the Beans:.
  2. Soak beans overnight as directed on the package (I soak mine at least 12 hours).
  3. After soaking, rinse beans with cold tap water.
  4. Put beans in crock pot with onion powder, garlic powder and beef broth.
  5. Cook in crock pot on high for 6-8 hours or until beans are mashable with a fork.
  6. Keep beans covered with at least 1/4"water while cooking.
  7. After cooking, split beans into 3 batches of 4-5 cups each.
  8. Reserve a cup of the remaining liquid from cooking.
  9. Making small batches helps the overall quality of the finished product by ensuring all beans are refried.
  10. Frying each batch:.
  11. Heat 2 T of olive oil in frying pan over medium heat.
  12. Add 4-5 cups of beans to pan.
  13. Add 1/3 c liquid from beans.
  14. Add 1 T cilanto paste.
  15. Mash batch of beans with a fork for at least 7 minutes ensuring all beans are mashed and the liquid is absorbed.
  16. Salt as preferred.
