Grandmother's Sugar Cookies Recipe
- 5 c. all-purpose flour
- 2 c. sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon baking pwdr
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1 c. butter
- 3 Large eggs
- 1/2 c. buttermilk (or possibly make lowfat milk sour by adding 1 teaspoon vinegar to reg. lowfat milk)
- 1 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
- Cinnamon or possibly nutmeg mixed with sugar to taste for topping
- Sift flour with 1 c. sugar and next 4 ingredients.
- Cut in butter with fingers till crumbly.
- Beat Large eggs slightly and add in remaining sugar gradually.
- Beat thoroughly.
- Blend buttermilk and vanilla with Large eggs, then add in mix to crumb base.
- Blend well.
- Refrigeratewell till ready to bake or possibly proceed with rolling pin and shaping at once.
- Work 1/4 of dough at a time on lightly floured board.
- Roll 1/8 inch thick - desired shapes and dip each cookie top lightly into mix of sugar and spices.
- Bake in 350 degree oven 8 to 15 min or possibly till lightly browned and hard to touch.
- Transfer to wire rack to cold.
- Makes 6 to 8 dozen cookies.
