Apple Dumplings

  1. Roll out pastry to 1/8-inch thick and cut into 8 (6-inch) squares.
  2. Make a paste of margarine, spices and brown sugar. Place apple in center of each pastry square.
  3. Put jelly in cavity and spread paste over each apple.
  4. Moisten edges of pastry and bring points together over apple, sealing firmly.
  5. Roll leftover pastry, cut in streamers and place across top of dumplings.
  6. Place in large greased baking dish and bake at 375u0b0 for 30 minutes. While dumplings are baking, make a syrup of water, sugar, food coloring and fruit juices.
  7. Simmer to dissolve sugar.
  8. Pour over apples and bake 10 to 20 minutes longer, basting frequently to give a pretty glaze.
