Greek Easter Bread Recipe
- 3 pkg. powdered yeast
- 1/2 c. water
- 8 c. sifted flour
- 1 c. sugar
- 1 c. shortening
- 6 Large eggs
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon masthia
- 1 teaspoon powdered mahleb
- 1 1/2 c. lowfat milk
- 2 tbsp. vegetable oil
- Dissolve yeast in 1/2 c. hot water.
- Set aside.
- Place flour, sugar and shortening in large bowl.
- Roll by hand to feel like cornbread.
- Add in 5 beaten Large eggs and other remaining ingredients.
- Knead well.
- Place in pan, cover and let stand in hot place till size doubles.
- Knead again (very lightly) and let rise.
- Divide into 3 loaves.
- Place each loaf into a pan.
- Brush with remaining beaten egg.
- Sprinkle with sesame seeds.
- Bake at 350 degrees for 30 min.
