Portuguese Sweet Bread Recipe

  1. Dissolve yeast in hot water in large bowl.
  2. Stir in lowfat milk, 3/4 c. sugar, the salt, 3 Large eggs, the butter and 3 c. of the flour.
  3. Beat till smooth.
  4. Stir in sufficient remaining flour to make dough easy to handle.
  5. Turn dough onto lightly floured surface; knead till smooth and elastic, about 5 min.
  6. Place in greased bowl; turn greased side up.
  7. Cover; let rise in hot place till double, 1 1/2 to 2 hrs.
  8. (Dough is ready if indentation remains when touched.)
  9. Punch down dough; divide into halves.
  10. Shape each half into a round, slightly flat loaf.
  11. Place each loaf in greased round layer pan 9 x 1 1/2 inch.
  12. Cover; let rise till double, about 1 hour.
  13. Heat oven to 350 degrees.
  14. Beat 1 egg slightly; brush over loaves.
  15. Sprinkle with 1 tsp.
  16. sugar.
  17. Bake till loaves are golden 35-45 min.
  18. Makes 2 loaves.
