Pears Cooked in Wine

  1. Slice ginger and then julienne it into thin strips.
  2. Pour the water into a saucepan large enough to hold the 6 pears side by side.
  3. Add the sugar, the ginger, the lemon juice,the clove and the cinnamon.
  4. Stir until sugar is dissolved.
  5. Let cook 5 minutes.
  6. Strain and bring to boil again.
  7. Peel pears leaving 1-inch of the stems.
  8. Cut off a slice in the bottom so pears can stand upright.
  9. Place pears in the boiling liquid and cook 30 minutes until tender.
  10. Add 5 tbsp.
  11. wine and cook another 10 minutes.
  12. Tranfer pears to a serving dish or individual dishes.
  13. Let liquid in pan reduce to 2 cups.
  14. Add 1 more tbsp.
  15. wine.
  16. Pour sauce over pears.
  17. Serve with ice cream.
  18. May be served warm or cold.
