Elsie's Meringue Tarts

  1. Combine egg whites, almond extract, cream of tartar and salt.
  2. Add sugar, one tablespoon at a time, beating until glossy and stiff peaks form.
  3. Drop by tablespoons onto a cookie sheet covered with brown paper.
  4. Using the back of the spoon, make a small depression in each meringue tart.
  5. Bake 45 minutes at 250F Then turn the oven off and leave tarts in the oven with the door closed for one hour (longer if they are not cool and/or crispy).
  6. Cool away from drafts.
  7. Place on tsp sour cream into each tart and top with berries.
  8. You can substitute vanilla ice cream for a more filling dessert.
