Best Ever Butter Toffee

  1. Butter 15x10x1-inch baking pan; set aside.
  2. Combine all ingredients except nuts and chocolate chips in heavy 3-quart saucepan.
  3. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until butter is melted.
  4. Reduce heat to medium-low.
  5. Cook 25-40 minutes, stirring occasionally, until candy thermometer reaches 300F or small amount of mixture dropped into cold water forms hard brittle strands.
  6. Stir in 1 cup nuts.
  7. Pour mixture into prepared pan; spread to desired thickness.
  8. Sprinkle chocolate chips over hot candy; let stand 5 minutes.
  9. Spread melted chocolate evenly over candy.
  10. Sprinkle with nuts.
  11. Cool at least 3 hours.
  12. Break into pieces.
  13. Store in container with tight-fitting lid, in cool dry place, up to 3 weeks.
