Good-Dog Treats
- 3 cups whole wheat flour
- 1 cup nonfat dry milk
- 3 tablespoons dry chicken gravy mix
- 3 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1 egg
- 2/3 cup vegetable oil
- 1 cup warm water
- Creating the Jar:
- Wash and thoroughly dry a 1-quart wide-mouth canning jar.
- Layer the ingredients in the jar as shown at left, pressing firmly with a flat-bottomed object, such as a tart tamper or the bottom of a narrow glass, after each addition.
- Make the layers as level as possible.
- Secure the lid, and decorate as desired (see Notes).
- Attach the follwing instructions for making the dog treats:

- Yield: About 48 treats
- In addition to the contents of the jar, you will need to add the following ingredients:
- 1 egg
- 2/3 cup vegetable oil
- 1 cup warm water
- Preheat the oven to 300F.
- Place the contents of the Jar In a large bowl.
- Add the egg, oil, and water, and stir well to form a soft dough.
- Turn onto a floured surface, knead for 3 minutes, then roll into a 1/4 inch thick 12-inch square.
- Cut into 1 1/2-x-2-inch pieces, or cut into shapes with a cookie cutter.
- (Bone-shaped cutters are sold at many pet supply stores.)
- Place about 1 inch apart on an ungreased baking sheet.
- Bake for 20 minutes, turn over, and continue to bake another 10 minutes, or until lightly browned on both sides.
- Cool completely before storing in an airtight container.
