Good-Dog Treats

  1. Creating the Jar:
  2. Wash and thoroughly dry a 1-quart wide-mouth canning jar.
  3. Layer the ingredients in the jar as shown at left, pressing firmly with a flat-bottomed object, such as a tart tamper or the bottom of a narrow glass, after each addition.
  4. Make the layers as level as possible.
  5. Secure the lid, and decorate as desired (see Notes).
  6. Attach the follwing instructions for making the dog treats:

  8. Yield: About 48 treats
  9. In addition to the contents of the jar, you will need to add the following ingredients:
  10. 1 egg
  11. 2/3 cup vegetable oil
  12. 1 cup warm water
  13. Preheat the oven to 300F.
  14. Place the contents of the Jar In a large bowl.
  15. Add the egg, oil, and water, and stir well to form a soft dough.
  16. Turn onto a floured surface, knead for 3 minutes, then roll into a 1/4 inch thick 12-inch square.
  17. Cut into 1 1/2-x-2-inch pieces, or cut into shapes with a cookie cutter.
  18. (Bone-shaped cutters are sold at many pet supply stores.)
  19. Place about 1 inch apart on an ungreased baking sheet.
  20. Bake for 20 minutes, turn over, and continue to bake another 10 minutes, or until lightly browned on both sides.
  21. Cool completely before storing in an airtight container.
