Orange-Poppy Seed Scones

  1. Preheat oven to 400F.
  2. Lightly flour heavy large baking sheet.
  3. Mix 2 1/2 cups flour, sugar, poppy seeds, cream of tartar, baking soda and salt in large bowl.
  4. Add butter and rub in with fingertips until mixture resembles coarse meal.
  5. Mix in 2 teaspoons grated orange peel.
  6. Whisk egg and 2 tablespoons orange juice in medium bowl to blend.
  7. Add to flour mixture; stir just until blended.
  8. Turn dough out onto lightly floured surface; knead gently until smooth.
  9. Divide dough in half.
  10. Pat each half into 3/4-inch-thick round.
  11. Cut each round into 6 wedges.
  12. Arrange wedges on prepared baking sheet.
  13. Bake until golden brown, about 10 minutes.
  14. Serve warm.
