Hot Cross Buns
- 3 Tbsp. shortening
- 1/3 c. sugar
- 1 tsp. salt
- 1 c. milk, scalded
- 1/2 yeast cake
- 1/4 c. lukewarm water
- 3/4 tsp. powdered cinnamon
- 1 tsp. powdered ginger
- 1 egg
- flour
- 1/2 c. raisins
- Add shortening, sugar and salt to milk.
- When lukewarm, add yeast cake dissolved in water, spices, well beaten eggs and sufficient flour to make a stiff dough.
- Mix well.
- Add raisins. Cover and let rise overnight.
- In morning, divide into pieces and form into neat buns.
- Place on greased pan an inch apart; let rise and brush over with milk or beaten egg.
- Bake at 375u0b0 for 25 minutes.
- Cool slightly.
- Combine 1 cup powdered sugar, 1/4 teaspoon vanilla and enough milk to make drizzling consistency (about 1 1/2 tablespoons).
- Drizzle over top of buns.
