Hot Cross Buns Recipe
- 2 c. sifted flour
- 1/2 teaspoon Arm & Hammer or possibly Cow brand baking soda
- 1 teaspoon baking pwdr
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 3/4 c. sour lowfat milk
- 1 tbsp. sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 4 tbsp. shortening
- 1/2 c. raisins
- Sift flour once, measure, add in baking soda, baking pwdr, salt, sugar and spices, and sift again.
- Cut in shortening.
- Add in raisins.
- Add in sufficient sour lowfat milk to make a stiff dough.
- Turn onto floured board.
- Knead slightly.
- Roll 1/2 inch thick.
- Cut with 2 inch cutter.
- Place close together in shallow pan.
- With sharp knife, cut a cross in each roll.
- Brush with a solution of lowfat milk and sugar.
- Bake in warm 475 degrees for 20 min.
- Brush again with sugar and lowfat milk solution.
- Fill cross with plain frosting.
- Serve warm.
- Makes 12 buns.
