Mama Steve's Bread Pudding - Bread Pudding
- 2 cups (475 ml) biscuit crumbs
- 2 cups (475 ml) milk
- 1/2 cup (125 ml) partially melted butter
- 1-1/2 cups (350 ml) sugar
- 1 tsp (5 ml). vanilla
- 4 slightly beaten eggs
- spices, optional
- raisins, optional
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees (200 C.).
- Mix together the sugar, milk, eggs, butter and vanilla.
- Place the biscuits, (they always used leftovers) in a large buttered casserole dish,(it needs to be large enough dish, that when you put all the ingredients in it, that the dish is only about 1/2 full, because it doubles in size).
- Pour the milk mixture over it.
- Mmix slightly.
- Mixture should be about the consistency of fresh uncooked cornbread dressing, (and for you non-Southern people, I don't know what to tell ya'll to compare it to, just I guess, thick but soupy).
- Put a pan of water on the lower shelf of the oven.
- Then put the baking dish in the middle of the oven, uncovered.
- Bake for about 45 minutes to 1 hour, or until when you stick a knife in the middle it comes out fairly clean.
- It will still be a little juicy on the edges, but it will finish cooking after you take it out.
- Some people put spices, raisins, or whatever in their bread pudding, but Mama Steve did not, and I loved it that way.
- You can top it with a lemon sauce or vanilla sauce, or just eat it plain, which is the way I like it.
