Spicy Shepherds Pie

  1. In a small saucepan, make Ikea gravy according to package directions (using the required water and heavy cream as specified on the package); set aside.
  2. Brown the beef in a large cast iron skillet over medium heat for about 5-7 minutes; when no longer pink, remove from heat, drain fat and set aside.
  3. On medium heat and using the same skillet, add garlic, jalapeno, onions and carrot; saute about 5 minutes or until vegetables are softened.
  4. Stir in peas and warm through, about 3 minutes.
  5. Add cooked beef and the gravy; stir to combine.
  6. Place ground beef mixture into greased individual cast iron skillets or a casserole dish; cover with a layer of mashed potatoes, top with cheese and sprinkle with smoked paprika.
  7. Bake in a 350 degrees F oven for 15 minutes; move rack to the broil position and broil for 2-3 minutes or until cheese gets golden brown.
  8. Remove from the oven and let rest for about 10 minutes before serving.
