Hj's Slow Cooker Split Pea Soup

  1. Layer ingredients in slow cooker in the order given; pour in water.
  2. Do not stir ingredients.
  3. Cover and cook on HIGH for 4-5 hours or on low for 8-10 hours until peas are very soft and ham falls off the bone.
  4. Remove bones and bay leaf.
  5. Chop meat into bite sized pieces.
  6. Mash peas to thicken more, if desired.
  7. About an hour before you are ready to serve brown sausage and add to soup.
  8. if you are going to add this option.
  9. Serve garnished with croutons.
  10. Freezes well.
