Spicy Margarita
- 1 tablespoon Spicy Salt, recipe follows
- 3 ounces tequila
- 2 ounces freshly squeezed lime juice
- 1 ounce Simple Syrup, recipe follows
- 1/2 to 1 teaspoon orange liqueur
- 1/4 cup kosher salt
- Finely grated zest of one lime
- 1/4 teaspoon ancho chile powder
- 1/4 teaspoon chipotle chile powder
- 1 cup sugar
- Put the Spicy Salt on a plate.
- Dip the rim of a chilled margarita glass into the mixture to coat the edge.
- Fill a cocktail shaker with ice.
- Add the tequila, lime juice, Simple Syrup and orange liqueur.
- Cover and shake until mixed and chilled, about 30 seconds.
- (In general, the drink is ready by the time the shaker mists up.)
- Strain the margarita into the prepared glass.
- Combine the salt, lime zest, ancho chile powder and chipotle chile powder in a small bowl.
- Combine the sugar and 1 cup water in a small saucepan.
- Cook over low heat, stirring, until the sugar dissolves.
- (Alternatively, heat in the microwave.)
- Let cool.
- Store in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to 1 month.
- Yield: about 1 1/2 cups
