Grandma's Fruit Bars

  1. Pre-heat oven to 350F.
  2. Grease a 10x15-inch jellyroll pan and set aside.
  3. In a medium saucepan, bring the raisins, water, sugar and shortening to a boil.
  4. Add cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves and allow to cool.
  5. While the spice mixture is cooling, sift together the flour, salt and baking soda.
  6. Add to cooled mixture and stir well.
  7. Stir in chopped nuts and dates.
  8. Spread in prepared pan and bake for about 30 minutes.
  9. May be frosted, or very good left plain Makes 25 (2 x 3") bars.
