Damper Bread

  1. Mix yeast, water, and sugar in a bowl.
  2. Mix dry ingredients in a large bowl.
  3. Cut in shortening.
  4. Add yeast mixture and buttermilk to dry ingredients.
  5. Stir until just mixed.
  6. Knead lightly on floured surface until smooth.
  7. Cover and let rest 10 minutes.
  8. Form into 7" circle.
  9. Place on greased cookie sheet.
  10. Cover and let rise 30 minutes in a warm place.
  11. Preheat oven to 375.
  12. Cut x on top.
  13. Bake 35 minutes.
  14. Serve warm.
