dal fry
- 1 cup yellow split pea lentils(tur dal)
- 1 medium onion(chopped)
- 2 medium tomatoes(chopped)
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 1 tsp black mustard seeds
- 3 clove garlic(chopped finely )
- 1/4 inch ginger(chopped finely)
- 1 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tsp cumin powder
- 1 tsp coriander powder
- 1 dash garam masala
- 1/2 tsp red chili powder(optional)
- 2 medium green chilies
- 1 salt to taste
- 2 tsp vegetable oil
- 1/2 bunch coriander leaves(torn roughly)
- 1/2 a lemon juice (freshly squeezed)
- in a pressure cooker add the thoroughly washd lentils with water half a finger or a lil more above the level of lentils and cook til 4 whistles
- if even after 4 whistles the lentils r nt tender enuf 2 b dissolvin then giv a couple of whistles more
- if u dont hv a pressure cooker den in a pot add lentils with water filling half of the pot.cook it covered til the lentils r cooked enuf to be dissolving
- now in a saucepan heat the oil and add the cumin seeds and the mustard seeds
- when the seeds crackle add the garlic, ginger ,chilies
- saute a lil and the onion and saute til golden
- nw add cumin,coriander,turmeric,red chili powders and salt and sprinkle some water.fry for a few minutes
- nw add tomatoes and fry til the tomatoes r tender.
- with a spoon mash the lentils with the water til u get a relatively smooth mix.add this mix to the pan.bring it to a boil & keep it on a medium high for a few minutes til u see the dal thickening
- then simmer til u get the desired thicknes(which shud b sumthing lyk a creamy soup)
- add the garam masala and the lemon juice and the coriander leaves and leave it on the heat a min more
- serve hot with rice
