Spiced Fruit
- 1 cup firmly packed light brown sugar
- 1/2 cup sauterne, dry white wine (regular or nonalcoholic), or apple juice
- 1/4 cup cider vinegar
- 10 to 15 whole cloves
- 1/8 teaspoon curry powder
- 2 cinnamon sticks, each about 3 inches long
- 1 15-ounce can sliced peaches in fruit juice, drained
- 1 15-ounce can sliced pears in fruit juice, drained
- 16 to 24 honeydew melon balls, fresh or frozen, or 4 medium kiwifruit, peeled and sliced
- 8 fresh pineapple spears or one 20-ounce can pineapple chunks in their own juice, drained
- 2 to 4 plums, sliced
- In a medium saucepan, stir together the brown sugar, sauterne, vinegar, cloves, and curry powder.
- Add the cinnamon sticks.
- Cook over medium heat for 3 to 5 minutes, or until heated through, stirring frequently.
- Meanwhile, in a large bowl, stir together the remaining ingredients.
- Pour the hot syrup over the fruit.
- Stir well.
- Let cool at room temperature for 30 minutes.
- Cover and refrigerate for 8 to 24 hours.
- Discard the cloves and cinnamon sticks before serving the fruit.
