Hermits
- 34 cup vegetable shortening (not butter)
- 34 cup granulated sugar
- 34 cup brown sugar
- 3 cups flour
- 2 eggs, beaten-save 1 tablespoon to brush on top of bars
- 12 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon ground cloves
- 12 teaspoon ginger
- 14 cup molasses
- 18 cup water
- 1 cup raisins (more if you wish)
- 1 cup broken nuts (usually walnuts)
- .Cream shortening with sugars.
- Add eggs (save 1 tablespoon for tops).
- Add dry ingredients alternately with liquids.
- Add nuts and raisins.
- Divide dough into thirds.
- Spread into strips about 3 inches wide down a large greased cookie sheet.
- Shape strips evenly.
- space apart to allow for spreading.
- Using fingers or a brush, brush each strip with reserved egg.
- Bake at 350 degrees for 12 to 15 minute Bars will be soft.
- Cool for at least 10 minute Cut into bars.
- To keep soft put in airtight container.
