Dal Biryani
- 5 cups water, divided
- 1 cup brown lentils, uncooked
- 1 cup basmati rice, uncooked
- 1/4 cup Miracle Whip Original Spread Family Dollar $3.50 thru 02/07
- 1 tsp. garam masala
- 1 tsp. ground cumin
- 1 tsp. ground coriander
- 1 tsp. dried fenugreek leaves
- 1/2 tsp. red chili powder or cayenne pepper
- 1/2 tsp. ground turmeric
- 2 plum tomatoes, finely chopped King Sooper's 1 lb For $0.99 thru 02/09
- 1 Tbsp. oil
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 1 Tbsp. minced gingerroot
- 2 cloves garlic, chopped
- 1/2 tsp. cumin seed
- Bring 4 cups water to boil in large saucepan.
- Meanwhile, combine lentils and rice in medium bowl.
- Add enough cold water to cover.
- Let stand 10 min.
- ; drain.
- Add lentil mixture to boiling water; return to boil.
- Simmer on medium heat 10 to 12 min.
- or just until lentils and rice are tender; drain.
- Mix Miracle Whip, seasonings and remaining water.
- Stir in tomatoes; set aside.
- Heat oil in large skillet on medium-high heat.
- Add next 4 ingredients; cook and stir 4 min.
- or until onions are crisp-tender.
- Stir in Miracle Whipmixture and lentil mixture; cover.
- Simmer on medium-low heat 30 min.
- or until liquid is absorbed.
- Remove from heat.
- Let stand 10 min.
- Fluff with fork.
