Strawberry Meringue Bars

  1. Heat oven to 350F.
  2. Combine flour and 1/2 cup sugar in bowl; cut in butter with pastry blender or fork until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Stir in egg yolks until well mixed.
  4. Press onto bottom of ungreased 13x9-inch baking pan.
  5. Bake 15-20 minutes or until edges are lightly browned.
  6. Beat egg whites and cream of tartar in bowl at high speed 45-60 seconds or until foamy.
  7. Continue beating, gradually adding powdered sugar, 1-1 1/2 minutes or until glossy and stiff peaks form.
  8. Spread preserves over hot, partially baked crust.
  9. Spread egg white mixture over preserves; sprinkle with almonds.
  10. Continue baking 22-27 minutes or until light golden brown.
  11. Cool completely.
  12. Cut into bars with sharp, wet knife.
