Spicy Applesauce Cake

• 1/4 c. shortening
• 1/2 c. granulated sugar
• 1/2 c. brown sugar, packed
• 1 egg
• 3/4 c. unsweetened applesauce
• 1 1/4 c. flour
• 1/4 tsp. salt
• 1/4 tsp. cloves
• 1/4 tsp. cinnamon
• 1/4 tsp. allspice
• 1/2 tsp. baking powder
• 3/4 tsp. baking soda
• 1/4 c. hot water

1. Cream together shortening and sugar.
2. Blend in egg and applesauce.
3. Sift together flour, salt, cloves, cinnamon, allspice and baking powder.
4. Add alternately with the baking soda which has been dissolved in the hot water to the applesauce mixture.
5. Pour into greased and floured 8-inch square baking pan.
6. Bake at 350u0b0 for 35 to 45 minutes, until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.
