Onion Gratin

  1. Bring a pot of water to a boil and add salt.
  2. Preheat the oven to 400F.
  3. Drop the onions into the water and leave them there for a minute.
  4. Peel them, then put them in a buttered ovenproof dish large enough to hold them in one layer.
  5. Sprinkle them with salt, pepper, and a little nutmeg, then pour the cream over all.
  6. Bake until the top is brown and the onions are soft, about 30 minutes.
