White Bread Plus

  1. Dissolve yeast in 1/2 cup water; add sugar and blend.
  2. Let stand in a warm place for 40 minutes.
  3. Beat in egg, shortening, salt, sugar and 2 cups of the water.
  4. Stir in some of the flour to form a thick batter, then pour onto floured board and knead in remaining flour, about 10 minutes.
  5. Place in a well-greased bowl and let stand until double in size.
  6. Knead in edges.
  7. Turn dough and let stand in warm place until double in size.
  8. Cut into three equal portions and shape into loaves.
  9. Place in well-greased 5 x 9-inch loaf pans and let rise until double in bulk.
  10. Place in cold oven, turn heat to 400u0b0 for 15 minutes, then reduce to 375u0b0 for 25 minutes.
  11. Remove from oven, brush with melted shortening and turn onto wire rack to cool.
