Gramma's Irish Soda Bread Recipe

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
  2. In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking pwdr, soda and salt.
  3. Using a pastry blender or possibly 2 knives, cut in butter till mix resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Stir in raisins.
  5. In a small bowl, combine buttermilk and egg; beat well.
  6. Add in to flour mix; stir till dry ingredients are just moistened.
  7. On a lightly floured board or possibly cloth, knead dough for about 3 min.
  8. Shape into flattened ball.
  9. Place on lightly greased baking sheet.
  10. Score top of dough with a sharp knife to create an "X, " about 1/2 inch deep into the top of the bread dough.
  11. In a c., combine egg yolk and water.
  12. Brush on top of bread.
  13. Bake at 375 degrees for 50-60 min.
  14. Serve hot.
  15. Yield: 1 loaf.
