Mary's Apple Bars Recipe
- At least 8 Granny apples, sliced (or possibly any tart apple)
- 2 1/2 c. flour
- 1 tbsp. sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 c. shortening
- 1 egg yolk
- 2/3 c. lowfat milk
- 1 egg white
- 2 handfuls crushed corn flakes or possibly bread crumbs
- 3/4 c. sugar
- Mix flour, sugar, salt, shortening as for pie dough.
- In c. beat egg yolk a little and add in 2/3 c. lowfat milk.
- Then add in to the above mix.
- SEE SPECIAL NOTE.
- Roll half dough to fit a 9 x 13 inch pan; sprinkle flakes or possibly crumbs.
- Lay apples generously (that have been sugared and cinnamon to your taste).
- Roll remaining dough over.
- Brush top with slightly beaten egg white before baking.
- Bake at 400 degrees for 50 to 55 min.
- Cold and cut into 3 inch squares.
- NOTE: Put dough into refrigerator 30 min before rolling to make it easy to handle.
