Czech Kolaches Recipe
- 1 c. lowfat milk
- 1/3 c. sugar
- 5 c. flour
- 2 ounce. yeast
- Healthy pinch of salt
- Lemon peel
- 2 tbsp. vanilla sugar
- 4 ounce. butter, melted
- 2 Large eggs, divided
- 2 tbsp. vanilla sugar (for sprinkle)
- Mix yeast with 1/2 c. hot lowfat milk, tsp.
- of sugar and allow to rise.
- Sift flour, add in sugar, lemon peel, salt, vanilla, sugar, the risen yeast and work it into a dough with remainder of lowfat milk, egg yolks and butter.
- Allow dough to stand for a while, then cut into small circles and shape into balls.
- Place on greased baking sheet, not too close, make a depression in each ball into that you place filling.
- brush edges with egg whites.
- Let rise for a while, then bake for 30 min in 325 degree oven.
- When golden brown, sprinkle with vanilla sugar.
