Caramel Layers
- 1 cup flour
- 14 teaspoon baking soda
- 14 teaspoon salt
- 12 cup brown sugar, packed
- 34 cup quick oatmeal
- 12 cup butter
- 24 Kraft caramels
- 2 tablespoons milk
- 2 tablespoons flour
- 12 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
- Preheat oven to 350.
- Sift or whisk flour, baking soda and salt together.
- Mix in the oatmeal and brown sugar.
- (I usually use old fashioned oats).
- Cut in butter with a pastry blender until particles are fine.
- Reserve 1 cup mixture for top.
- Press remaining mixture in bottom of a greased 8x8 pan.
- Bake at 350 for 10 minutes, cool.
- Combine caramels and milk in the top of a double boiler and melt caramels over boiling water.
- Blend in remaining 2 T. flour and mix well.
- Spread caramel carefully over the cooled crust and sprinkle with the chocolate chips.
- Crumble reserved oatmeal mixture evenly over the top, pat crumbs down gently.
- Bake at 350 for 12-15 minutes or until delicately brown.
- Cool completely and cut into bars.
