Smashed Potatoes and Peas

  1. Generously cover potatoes with cold water in a small saucepan.
  2. Add 1/2 teaspoon salt.
  3. Simmer, covered, until just beginning to get tender, about 8 minutes.
  4. Add peas and simmer, partially covered, until potatoes are tender, about 5 minutes.
  5. Drain, then return to pan.
  6. Add butter, milk, and 1/8 teaspoon each of salt and pepper.
  7. Let stand off heat 1 minute, then add scallion.
  8. Coarsely mash.
