Chocolate Amaretto Brownies

  1. Combine shortening (Crisco butter-flavored is good, or I've used margarine to be cholesterol-conscious) and chocolate in heavy saucepan; place over low heat, stirring constantly, until combined.
  2. Remove from heat and cool.
  3. Stir in eggs and amaretto.
  4. Combine flour and salt; add to creamed mixture, stirring well.
  5. Pour batter into a lightly greased 13 x 9 x 2 inch king pan.
  6. Bake at 400F (200C) for 20 minutes; cool.
  7. Frost with Amaretto frosting, sprinkle with sliced almonds (or arrange in flowery patterns).
  8. Cut into squares.
  9. Note: 3 Tablespoons powdered baking cocoa can be substituted for chocolate squares.
  10. Combine butter and chocolate in a heavy saucepan; place over low heat and stir constantly until melted.
  11. Stir in half and half.
  12. Add powdered sugar, salt, Amaretto, stirring until smooth.
