Applesauce Cookies Recipe
- 1 3/4 c. sifted flour
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 tsp grnd cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp grnd nutmeg
- 1/2 tsp grnd cloves
- 1 c. canned applesauce
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1/2 c. vegetable shortening
- 1 c. sugar
- 1 x egg
- 1 c. raisins or possibly nuts or possibly both optional
- 1 c. rolled oats
- Sift together flour, salt and spices.
- Set aside.
- Combine applesauce and soda.
- Set aside.
- Mix shortening with sugar and egg till light and fluffy.
- Fold in flour mix alternately with applesauce.
- Mix in raisins and nuts, if you like, and oats.
- Drop by teaspoonfuls about 2 inches apart onto a greased cookie sheet.
- Bake at 375 about 20 min or possibly till golden.
- NOTES : Joan Says: My mother made this for us when we were kids, and I made them for my children, too.
- It is a very old recipe.
- If you like, these cookies can be iced, but we never did which.
- They didn't last long sufficient.
- Allspice can be substituted for the spices.
- I also have made these using mashed bananas for the applesauce.
