Apple Dumplings
- 3 small baking apples, peeled, halved and cored
- 2 cups flour
- 14 teaspoon salt
- 12 cup chilled butter, cut into half inch cubes
- 3 tablespoons butter, melted (for brushing)
- 12 cup water (you may not need all of it)
- 34 cup brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 14 teaspoon nutmeg
- 12 cup chopped pecans
- 12 cup coarse sugar (optional)
- whipped cream or vanilla ice cream, for serving
- In a food processor, combine flour, butter, salt and water.
- Pulse until coarse crumbles form.
- Divide dough into 3 equal portions and flatten into disks.
- Wrap each disk in plastic wrap and chill in refrigerator for about 30 minutes.
- Meanwhile, preheat oven to 350F and prepare apples.
- In a small bowl, mix brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and pecans.
- Take dough from refrigerator and roll out into 9"-10" rounds.
- Place half of an apple in the center of the dough and top with 1/3 of the brown sugar mixture.
- Place the other apple half on top.
- Pull the dough up and around the apple to cover and pinch seams to close.
- Place apples on a lightly greased baking dish, seam side down, and brush tops with butter.
- If desired, press course sugar granules lightly into the tops of the dumplings.
- Bake for about 50 minutes.
- Serve warm with a side of whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.
