French Onion Soup with Bacon

  1. Cook and stir bacon in large saucepan on medium heat until crisp.
  2. Remove bacon from pan with slotted spoon; drain on paper towels.
  3. Discard all but 2 Tbsp.
  4. drippings from pan.
  5. Add onions to reserved drippings; cook 20 min.
  6. or until golden brown, stirring frequently.
  7. Add broth, pepper and thyme; stir.
  8. Simmer 15 min.
  9. Remove from heat; stir in bacon.
  10. Heat broiler.
  11. Ladle soup into 5 ovenproof bowls; top with remaining ingredients.
  12. Broil, 4 inches from heat, 2 to 3 min.
  13. or until cheeses are melted and golden brown.
