Fried Mozzarella Sticks
- 6 oz. Mozzarella
- Monterey Jack cheese (solid block)
- 2 tbsp. milk
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 egg
- 1 tsp. milk
- 3/4 cup seasoned fine dry bread crumbs
- Solid shortening (for frying)
- Heat 2 to 3 inches of shortening to 360F in deep fryer or deep saucepan.
- Cut block of cheese into 4 equal parts.
- Cut each fourth into 6 equal pieces (each about 2x1/2x1/2-inch).
- Place 2 tablespoons of milk in shallow bowl.
- Dip sticks in milk; coat with flour.
- Beat egg and remaining milk in small bowl.
- Dip floured cheese sticks in egg mixture; roll in bread crumbs, coating thickly.
- Freeze 25 minutes.
- Fry several sticks at a time in hot shortening for 30 to 45 seconds, or until golden brown and sticks float on top.
- Drain on paper towels and serve with tomato sauce, if desired.
- Sticks may be prepared way ahead of time and frozen.
- Frying time will be 45 to 60 seconds longer.
