Devil's Food Cake
- 2 cups flour
- 12 cup butter
- 9 tablespoons cocoa
- 2 teaspoons baking soda
- 4 eggs, unbeaten
- 23 cup sour milk
- 2 cups sugar
- 1 cup water, boiling
- 2 teaspoons vanilla
- 1 12 cups sugar
- 1 dash salt
- 12 cup water
- 3 tablespoons corn syrup
- 2 egg whites
- 12 teaspoon peppermint flavoring
- Cream butter and sugar, add eggs.
- Mix milk, soda, and vanilla, mix well.
- Add flour, mix well.
- Batter will be very thin.
- Pour into a greased and floured 9X 13 cake pan.
- Bake at 350* for 45 minute.
- Frost with Peppermint Chocolate Flavored Frosting.
- Cook sugar, salt, water and corn syrup to the soft ball stage (238 degrees).
- Remove mixture from heat.
- Beat egg whites quickly with a rotary beater.
- Pour hot syrup slowly in a fine steam over egg whites, beating constantly.
- Add peppermint and continue beating until frosting stands up in peaks.
- Quickly spread on cake.
- On a rainy or humid day, boil syrup to higher temperature.
- If frosting hardens before spreading, beat in a few drops of hot water.
- Make frosting for top and sides of two 9 inch layer cakes.
