Devil's Food Cake

  1. Cream butter and sugar, add eggs.
  2. Mix milk, soda, and vanilla, mix well.
  3. Add flour, mix well.
  4. Batter will be very thin.
  5. Pour into a greased and floured 9X 13 cake pan.
  6. Bake at 350* for 45 minute.
  7. Frost with Peppermint Chocolate Flavored Frosting.
  8. Cook sugar, salt, water and corn syrup to the soft ball stage (238 degrees).
  9. Remove mixture from heat.
  10. Beat egg whites quickly with a rotary beater.
  11. Pour hot syrup slowly in a fine steam over egg whites, beating constantly.
  12. Add peppermint and continue beating until frosting stands up in peaks.
  13. Quickly spread on cake.
  14. On a rainy or humid day, boil syrup to higher temperature.
  15. If frosting hardens before spreading, beat in a few drops of hot water.
  16. Make frosting for top and sides of two 9 inch layer cakes.
