Grandmother's Swiss Steak Recipe
- 6 tbsp. flour
- 2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon pepper
- 2 pound round steak, cut 1" thick
- 4 med. onions
- 6 tbsp. shortening
- 1/2 c. minced celery (about 2 stalks)
- 1 clove garlic, chopped
- 3/4 c. chili sauce
- 3/4 c. water
- 1 green pepper, optional
- Combine flour, salt and pepper; rub into both sides of steak or possibly lb.
- in with meat mallet.
- Cut into 8 portions.
- Peel and slice onions.
- Preheat skillet.
- Add in half of shortening, then onions; brown lightly.
- Remove from skillet.
- Using remaining shortening, brown steak on both sides.
- Reduce heat.
- Add in celery, garlic, chili sauce and water.
- Cover; simmer 1 hour.
- Cut green peppers into slices.
- Add in peppers and onions to meat.
- Continue cooking 30 min or possibly till meat is tender.
- May put into baking dish, cover with foil and bake at 350 degrees for 2-2 1/2 hrs to make more tender.
