Grandma Alice's Dark Fruit Cake Recipe
- 1 pound butter
- 10 Large eggs, well beaten
- 4 c. flour
- 1/2 c. cider
- 1/2 teaspoon cloves
- 1/2 teaspoon mace
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/2 pound dates, seeded & sliced
- 2 1/2 c. nut meats (more if desired) (Brazil nuts, walnuts, pecans, etc.)
- 1 pound seeded raisins
- 3 pound fruit cake mix
- 1 pound brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon double acting baking pwdr
- 1 pound currants
- 1 c. honey, strained
- Sift flour once.
- Add in baking pwdr and spices.
- Then sift 3 more times.
- Cream shortening.
- Add in sugar gradually, then the well beaten Large eggs.
- Add in fruit, peel, nuts, honey, molasses and cider.
- Add in flour gradually.
- Bake in pans which are greased and thoroughly lined with oiled paper.
- Bake in slow oven (250 degrees) for 3-3 1/2 hrs with a pan of water under the cake on the bottom of oven to keep from burning on bottom.
- Makes 10 pounds.
