Chewy Homemade Breadsticks

  1. In a large bowl, sprinkle yeast over the 1/4 cup water.
  2. Stand for 5 minutes.
  3. Stir in salad oil, sugar, salt, milk and 2 cups flour.
  4. Beat on medium speed for 5 minutes or until dough pulls from sides of bowl in stretchy strand.
  5. Stir in about 1 cup flour to form a stiff dough.
  6. Turn onto a lightly floured board.
  7. Knead for 10 minutes or until smooth.
  8. Turn dough over in a lightly greased bowl.
  9. Cover with plastic wrap.
  10. Let rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled.
  11. Turn dough out onto board.
  12. Knead to expel trapped air.
  13. Cut into 12 equal pieces.
  14. Cover and let rest 5 minutes. Roll each piece out into a log, about 12 inches long. Set breadsticks 1-inch apart, on a greased baking sheet.
  15. Brush tops lightly with oil.
  16. Sprinkle with caraway seed.
  17. Let rise in a warm place for 20 minutes or until puffy.
  18. Bake at 350u0b0 for 15 to 20 minutes or until golden.
  19. Cool on pan for 2 minutes.
