Awesome White Bread
- 2 cups warm water
- 23 cup white sugar
- 1 12 tablespoons active dry yeast
- 1 12 teaspoons salt
- 14 cup melted shortening
- 6 cups all-purpose flour
- In a large bowl, dissolve the sugar in the water and stir in the yeast.
- Let it proof(It'll turn into a big foam.
- This takes about ten minutes.
- ).
- Mix the salt and shortening into the yeast.
- And add one cup of flour into the bowl at a time.
- Knead dough on a floured surface until it's smooth.
- Place in well oiled bowl and turn to coat both sides.
- Cover and let rise in warm place until doubled in bulk.
- Punch down dough, knead and split in two.
- Shape into loaves.
- I have no idea if my way is the "right way".
- But I usually make loaves by playing with the dough until it's a smooth ball, push down half of it so it's flat.
- So basically, right now, it sort of looks like a road leading up to a speed bump.
- Then i take the flattened dough and wrap it around the "speed bump" sealing it up by wetting my hand and squeezing the creases.
- And lightly rolling the log back and forth on the seam.
- Alright?
- Place the loaves into well oiled 9x5 inch loaf pans.
- Let the dough rise until it's an inch above the pan.
- Brush with an egg wash (Egg and water, milk, or cream) and bake for 30 minutes in a 350 degree oven.
