Thumbprint Cookies

  1. Mix thoroughly the shortening, butter, brown sugar, egg yolk and vanilla. Sift together and stir in the flour and salt.
  2. Roll into 1-inch balls.
  3. Dip in slightly beaten egg whites.
  4. Roll in the nuts.
  5. Place about 1-inch
  6. apart on ungreased baking sheet. Bake in a 375u0b0 oven for 5 minutes.
  7. Remove from oven. Quickly press thumb gently on top of each cookie. Return to oven and bake 8 minutes longer.
  8. Cool.
  9. Place a bit of chopped candied fruit, sparkling jelly or tinted confectioners sugar icing in thumbprints.
  10. Makes about 2 dozen 1 1/2-inch cookies.
