Homemade Sloppy Joe Sandwiches
- 3/4 lb. ground beef (350 g)
- 1/2 medium onion
- 1/2 green bell pepper
- 1 stalk celery
- 1 clove garlic (optional)
- 1/2 jalapeno or other spicy chili (optional)
- 2/3 cup ketchup (150 ml)
- 1 Tbsp brown sugar
- 1 Tbsp Dijon or yellow mustard
- 1/4 tsp cumin (optional)
- 4 hamburger buns
- Prep the ingredients: Finely chop the onion, bell pepper and celery.
- Mince hot chili and garlic if using.
- In a large frying pan or sauce pan, add beef, vegetables, garlic and chili pepper and saute on medium.
- You shouldn't need any oil because the fat and liquid from beef will be enough.
- Cook for 10 minutes or so, until the beef has browned completely and the water from the vegetables has evaporated.
- Drain out any excess oil from the meat.
- Add the rest of the ingredients - ketchup, mustard, salt & pepper, sugar, cumin, and Worcestershire sauce - and mix well.
- Cover and let simmer on low for 10-15 minutes so the flavors soak right into the meat.
- Stir occasionally.
- It's ready once the sauce has thickened up!
- Toast the buns and pile on the Sloppy Joe mix!
- Have plenty of napkins available ;)
