Fried Tofu (Aburaage) Appetizers with Shiso, Bacon, and Cheese

  1. Using kitchen shears, cut 3 edges of the aburaage open, leave the fourth (long side) attached.
  2. Open the aburaage and lay two shiso leaves on top.
  3. On top of the shiso leaves, lay the bacon and cheese.
  4. Close the aburaage up again like a sandwich.
  5. Toast both sides of the filled aburaage from Step 2 in a nonstick pan.
  6. It's best to cook it slowly over medium heat.
  7. You can also toast the sandwich in a toaster oven.
  8. Place the sandwich on a toaster oven tray, and cook for 5-10 minutes for a perfectly done snack.
  9. Aim for a lightly browned surface.
