Sour Dough French Bread Recipe

  1. In large bowl soften yeast in 1 1/2 c. hot water.
  2. Blend in 2 c. of the flour sour dough starter, sugar, butter and 2 tsp.
  3. salt.
  4. Combine 1 c. flour and soda; stir into flour-yeast mix.
  5. Add in sufficient remaining flour to make a moderately stiff dough.
  6. Knead 5 to 8 min.
  7. Place in greased bowl, turn once.
  8. Cover, let rise till double.
  9. Punch down.
  10. Divide in half.
  11. Cover, let rest 10 min.
  12. Shape in 2 oblong or possibly round loaves.
  13. Place on greased baking sheet sprinkled with cornmeal.
  14. Cover; let rise till almost double.
  15. Brush with water and make diagonal slashes across top.
  16. Bake at 375 degrees for 30 to 35 min.
