Fresh Lemonade

  1. Optional flavorings: basil, scraped vanilla beans, freshly grated ginger (see Cook's Note)
  2. Combine the sugar with 1 cup water in a medium saucepan and bring to a boil.
  3. Reduce heat and allow the sugar to dissolve, 3 to 4 minutes.
  4. Remove from heat and cool completely.
  5. Combine the lemon juice, sugar syrup, and 4 cups cold water in a large pitcher.
  6. Refrigerate until well chilled, at least 1 hour.
  7. Serve over crushed ice and garnish with mint leaves and sliced lemons.
