Double Cheese Breakfast Strata
- Italian turkey sausages, removed from casings
- 2-1/4 qt. fresh mushrooms, sliced
- 1-1/2 cups green peppers, chopped
- 1-1/2 cups red peppers, chopped
- 1-1/2 cups onions, chopped
- 1 Tbsp. dried thyme leaves
- 2 cups Cheez Whiz Cheese Spread, divided
- 4-1/2 qt. Thick whole wheat bread slices, torn into bite-size pieces
- 2 cups Kraft Shredded Medium Cheddar Cheese, divided
- 18 each eggs
- 4-1/2 cups milk
- For each 8-serving strata: Crumble 1 lb.
- (450 g) sausage into large nonstick skillet on medium-high heat; cook 3 to 5 min.
- or until done, stirring frequently to break up sausage.
- Add 3 cups (750 mL) mushrooms, 1/2 cup (125 mL) each red peppers, green peppers and onions, and 1 tsp.
- (5 mL) thyme; cook 3 to 5 min.
- or until vegetables are crisp-tender, stirring frequently.
- Remove from heat.
- Stir in 1/3 cup (75 mL) Cheez Whiz.
- Set aside to cool slightly.
- Place 1-1/2 qt.
- bread in half-size 2-inch hotel pan or in 13x9-inch baking dish lightly sprayed with cooking spray.
- Top with 1/3 cup (75 mL) shredded cheese and sausage mixture.
- Whisk 6 eggs, 1-1/2 cups (375 mL) milk and 1/3 cup (75 mL) Cheez Whiz until well blended; pour over sausage mixture.
- Cover with foil.
- Refrigerate at least 6 hours or overnight.
- Bring to room temperature before baking.
- Bake, covered, in 350 degrees F (180 degrees C) standard oven 40 to 50 min.
- or until centre is set.
- Remove foil; top with 1/3 cup (75 mL) shredded cheese.
- Broil 2 to 3 min.
- or until cheese is melted.
- Let stand 5 min.
